Original Circa 1910 Emerson 12646 12" Lever Oscillator Desk Fan. The 12-series Emerson fans are among the most sought-after by collectors, and the 12646 is a clear example of why. It features several early Emerson design elements, including a centrifugal start switch that engages and disengages the start winding based on rotor RPM—recognizable by its distinct clicking sound at startup and shutdown. It also includes the unique first-generation “lever” oscillating gearbox, along with ornate motor and base castings.
Along with the features above, this stunning 12646 retains its original deep black Japan finish, which is in excellent condition (it is hard to believe it is 115 years old). The brass blades and cage have been beautifully polished and lacquered. Two wings have minor creases that are barely noticeable and do not affect performance. The gold lettering on the speed indicators and the gearbox appear to be refreshed at some point.
The fan runs great on its single speed as intended and oscillates very nicely considering that the first generation oscillators are not known for their graceful oscillation. The fan was fully disassembled for cleaning and servicing. The gearbox was cleared of old grease and re-lubricated, and the original finish was cleaned and waxed.
This rarely offered fan is an excellent addition to a collection or perfect for a conversation piece in any space.
